Everyone turns up to Newquay RNLI lifeboat day!

Newquay RNLI lifeboat day wowed a harbour packed with supporters. With fantastic weather and no operational incidents, lifeboat day went ahead with a programme jam packed with displays and stalls.

Planning a lifeboat day is no mean feat. It is a mission that started 12 months before the day. Newquay lifeboat events manager, Christine Brown, had been beavering away behind the scenes ensuring demonstrations, stalls and entertainment were all booked and timetabled. However there are two things that Christine couldn’t control – as much as she may try – the weather and operational requirements. For the last three years one or the other has scuppered something at lifeboat day – not this year! No incidents diverted the helicopter or lifeboats, no low level cloud  prevented the Black Knights parachuting and no rain  deterred the supporters.

Newquay’s harbour and seas were buzzing with activity from 10 am to 5 pm. Anyone venturing to the harbour could chose from musical entertainment, factual safety information, raffles, BBQ or face painting. If none of that took their fancy they could watch one of the continuous supply of rescue demonstrations from the RNLI lifeboats and RNLI lifeguards complemented by Koda the Newfoundland rescue dog and RNAS Culdrose helicopter crew in the afternoon.

Newquay RNLI fundraisers also provided a cake stall, bric a brac and a teddy bear’s picnic tombola as well as refreshments. Holiday makers and locals alike ventured into the harbour and supported the volunteer life saving service.

Newquay RNLI would like to thank all those involved visitors, supporters and volunteers, for making lifeboat day 2010 a very successful day. This year’s total looks to be in excess of £6,000.
