Sonya Morris ran in
this year’s Flora London Marathon, successfully raising over £500 for
Newquay RNLI.
This was Sonya’s first
marathon and she completed the course in 5 hours raising a total of £501 for
Newquay RNLI
Sonya, a BT employee, is
married to RNLI volunteer helmsman Mark Morris. Sonya is one of the
dedicated crew wives that learn to live with their husbands disappearing at
the call of a pager, not knowing when they will return. The volunteer crew
would not be able to provide the outstanding commitment to the RNLI without
their family's support and understanding.

Sonya is a member of the
Women’s Running Network and Newquay Roadrunners and competes in the Cornish
Grand Prix series of races.
“I understand the hard
work and dedication of the RNLI volunteers due to Mark’s involvement and
also his father Wayne who was lifeboat mechanic for many years and who is
now boathouse manager. I like to know that when the volunteer crew go to sea
that they have the best equipment and training possible.
“I feel that running 26
miles is not a lot compared to the dedication that the RNLI crew have to
their cause. - not only in the rescues that they carry out but also for the
amount of land based training that they have to complete.
Completing the London
Marathon was such an exciting experience. Crossing Tower Bridge was a
special moment as this is the image I have in my mind from watching the race
on the television for many years. Following some adverse weather conditions
it was great to have a lovely sunny finish as I approached Parliament and
finally running past Buckingham Palace and up the mall to the finish and
collect my long awaited medal.
I would like to thank all
the people that supported me through sponsorship and words of
encouragement. It was your support which kept me motivated throughout my
training and the marathon. Without donations the RNLI would not be able to
provide the first class life saving service.”
