11th RNLI vs. Police Mangled Prop Rugby Match

RNLI wins again!

Sunday 22nd April 2007

The Newquay RNLI lifeboat crew again challenged the Newquay Police to a charity rugby match on Sunday 22nd April. The annual event was held at Newquay Sports Centre and raised money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

This was the motley crew that turned out for the 11th mangled prop Rugby match....

and that was before.....

The friendly match now in its eleventh year and Newquay RNLI team is steaming ahead.  Newquay RNLI have won 6 matches, the Police have won 4 and one draw. The prize – a much coveted trophy – ‘the Mangled Prop’ yet again awarded to the winning team - Newquay RNLI - 19-13

There are two ‘Mangled Prop’ trophies, one for the rugby match and one for the Lifeboat Day gig race. The first Rugby match was a one off for fun and fund raising, held without a trophy. During the following 12 months the D-Class lifeboat ‘mangled’ its propeller whilst on an inspector’s exercise – this was then used as a trophy for both the rugby and the rowing, moving to the winners after each event. Five years ago, the Atlantic lifeboat suffered a similar fate. This propeller was also made into a trophy and is currently used for the rugby matches, the D-Class prop remaining with the gig race winners.

The additional award of 'Man of the Match' went to RNLI volunteer helmsman Ashley Mann. Ashley is the only person in the 11 years of the event to have played every minute of every game.

L-R Ian Pengelly, RNLI volunteer crew member/organiser of the match/referee and before you all start shouting "fix" he is a policeman!
Ashley Mann - yes him again
Eddie Burt, RNLI senior helmsman.

The event raised £81 for the RNLI, I'm sure that we could have raised more and probably have ground for litigation under the trade descriptions act - The raffle was £1 per strip but none of the team put their names forward.......

Thanks to all who took part and supported the event, Newquay Sport center for allowing us to use the pitch and facilities, Newquay Hornets for providing the RNLI kit and the pitch flags.

and to Pengers .....for organising it.
