Be
danger wise - stay safe on the sand
Organisations from Newquay
will be pulling together in a spectacular event to promote safety on the
beaches.
The three day family event will be held on
Towan beach and promenade from Friday 3rd August through to Sunday 5th
August from 12:00 hrs to 16:00 hrs. It will cover every aspect of beach and
sea safety..
Blue Reef aquarium staff will be giving
special rock pool talks which will feature information about the creatures
and plants in the pools whilst also highlighting the hidden dangers beneath
the water. There will be talks on weaver fish and beach cleaning activites.
Newquay Coastguard Cliff rescue team will be
at the event with their safety information trailer and coastguards will be
on hand to answer questions.
Newquay’s RNLI lifeboats and volunteer crew
will be on the beach for members of the public to get up close and, subject
to operational requirements, they will hold crew training exercises,
launching from the beach. The lifeboat station will also be open for members
of the public to see inside the boathouse.
As well as providing their usual beach patrol
service, Newquay’s RNLI lifeguards will be showing off their state of the
art rescue equipment, and will be on hand to answer questions. The RNLI
information trailer will be on the promenade, filled with sea and beach
safety information.
Newquay surf life saving club juniors will be
simulating a tube and board rescue on Saturday at 12:30 hrs
Safe skin care advice will be provided by the
Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust’s Macmillan Skin Cancer Nurse Specialist.
With skin cancer becoming a major threat, visitors to the event will be able
to learn how to stay safe in the sun and what skin changes to look out for.
Beach safety is not just about staying safe in
the sea and sun though. Newquay’s Beach Police Community Support Officer,
the first of his kind, will be on hand on Saturday and Sunday to explain his
role and how to avoid crime on the beaches. The police community safety van
will also be in attendance.
The event is being co-ordinated by Newquay’s
town manager, Guy Thomas who says
”The idea of the Beach Safety 2007 is to
provide fun activities for families, visitors and locals alike which all
carry a strong message about staying safe on our beaches and at sea.
”We are blessed with some of the best coastline in the country but we are
all at risk if we ignore the dangers that can present themselves.
”It is hoped this event will become an annual show and will continue to grow
and I would like to thank all the agencies involved in helping bring it
together at such short notice. There will be plenty to see to keep young and
old amused and it really will be of benefit to all who come. We hope to see
you there.”
Newquay RNLI lifeboat day falls on the last
day of the beach safety event. This runs from 10:00 hrs to 16:30 hrs in the
harbour. The day will include an air sea rescue exercise plus entertainment
and fundraising stalls on the quay. The day will end with a parachute jump
by the Royal Artillery.
