Our Soles was the message being shouted out at St Newlyn East and
Summercourt Primary Schools on Friday, when pupils wore their trainers to
help raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
To be able to wear their trainers
to school for a day the children had to donate £1 to the charity - and there
were even fetching RNLI laces available with which to tie up their footwear.
The charity's first SOS day was
held in June and South West schools proved to be fundraising champions,
collecting £10,000 - but this year they are hoping to raise more.
To help the campaign, St Newlyn
East raised more than £130 although some money is still coming in.
Summercourt raised more than £80.
As part of the day's events, our
President , Ron Eglington went to St Newlyn East and shared stories and
facts about the two Newquay Lifeboats, the Atlantic and the D class.
Our
press officer Tracy Cayton-Smith, who has two children at the school, said:
"They came home delighted and were sharing lots of facts with me. The school
had a really good response and we are very pleased both schools took part.
Every penny is vital."
Money raised through the SOS day
will go to the RNLI's crew training campaign, which, under the banner 'Train
one save many', aims to raise £10 million over the next five years.
The money will be used to provide
the vital training needed to ensure RNLI crew volunteers are fully prepared
for their role of saving lives.
Newquay RNLI Lifeboat would like
to thank Emma Wherry at the Cornish Guardian and the Newquay Voice for their
coverage of the events and their continue support for the Newquay Lifeboat.
